Default Painted Lady (this time it is!)

Butterflies a go-go! Out for me walk today, and suddenly, a dose of painted ladies appeared. At least 20 of them - looked like they were travelling together. They homed-in on some lavender that was in a strip of very well manicured communal garden. There was a gate with no padlock on it, so... shoot first and ask questions about access permission later, I thought. As I was shooting, a guy came out the houses and came over for a chat. I filled him in about the painted ladies and their migration and the nationwide count that is on this year. (S'pose I had better fill in a return now!) He was fine about me being there and said any time I want in, it's no bother.

They were quite skittish, and I was lucky I happened to have the 100-400 mm lens on, rather than the 100 mm macro, as I don't think they would have let me get close enough with the macro. The 100-400 mkII focuses to within 3 feet, which was just about close enough to get some decent shots with a bit of cropping...

You really need to hone your stalking skills Col

These were from my front garden a few years ago.

He-he - there was actually too many of them. The wee garden bit was a long narrow strip - maybe 100 ft by 10 ft. I was moving up and down the grass in the middle of it, trying to approach one that I could see, but in doing so was missing seeing others that were right under my feet. For such a colourful creature, they are amazingly camouflaged when they want to be. I kept spooking them as I went past them. The spooked ones would fly up and in doing so would spook others, and suddenly the air was full of them, all about my head. Good luck trying to get one of them in focus, in flight!

First time I've seen such big numbers of PLs hereabouts.

I'm now seeing them just about every time I look out the front window! Never seen so many in this neck of the woods!

I saw about 6 this morning when walking my dog in the field next to my house in Shetland. Loads of people are commenting on seeing lots of them this year.
