Thread: Corvids like to play...

I have seen my local pr of Carrion Crows having fun in the snow.Displaying the same sort of games/behavoir as in a couple of the vids. amazing.

Great videos, particularly that one of the crow snow boarding on the roof, they're far more intelligent than we give them credit for.

I watched a raven flying upside down a few years ago, I'd heard that they did this purely for fun but never thought I'd witness that behaviour. Worth looking out for, it's quite bizarre.

Watched a couple of crows turning over the leaf litter literally leaf by leaf this was earlier today

May be a bit of a coincidence but on the Yesterday tv channel earlier this week, Sir David Attenborough showed a clip of where a tasty morsel was in the bottom of a plastic bottle, attached to a piece of string. In no time, the said corvid being tested/anylised, realised that by pulling the string a distance from the bottleneck, it got it's deserved reward.

Loads of examples of them solving puzzles. New Caledonia crows are well-known for being tool-makers. There are no woodpeckers on New Caledonia, so crows have taken up the niche of getting grubs and other food out of wood and bark. But they don't have quite the right beaks. So, they have developed not just tool use, but tool-making.

This one has a basket with food inside a tube and has been given a straight piece of wire. It tries to lift the basket out the tube, but the wire has no grip. It needs a hooked end. So, the crow jams one end against the tray and bends the wire to make a hook, so it can then lift the basket out...



More akin to what they do in the wild, and better quality footage...
