A couple of things that haven't been mentioned, firstly if a salmon is in the mood it's far easier to catch than a trout, if it's not you are on a loser before you start. The fresher a salmon is the more likely it is to take a bait, or immediately after a rise in water levels can bring them on when the level has started to fall again.

If a salmon is following but not taking it's clearly interested so you need to make some small changes, first change the size of the bait, usually smaller is the way to go, then try a change of colour. When we fished the Wye in the good old days we knew we had fresh salmon in the pool as we could see them and we might be using our standard 2½" wooden brown & gold minnow. We might show this to a fish a dozen or more times then switch to a 2" and immediately get a take. The great unknown is of course whether that fish would have taken the original minnow on that cast, we'll never know but a take immediately after changing the bait happened too often to be just chance.

If a fish is following your lure do not slow up the retrieve to let it catch the lure, if anything speed up to make it look as if it's going to escape.

It took me about a dozen tries to get my first salmon on what then the most prolific river in England or Wales so don't give up, it will happen.

Salmon fishing and success has a "number" of factors to consider, the main 3 IMO are:

Knowing the river (reasonably well at least)
Knowing when and where to fish to optimise your chances

but most importantly,

Perseverance!!

You have to put the hours in to keep the rewards!!
Keep at it

Correct Jim, it it banned on most of the River Nith but you are allowed to fish if on the tidal stretch of the Burgh below the Castledykes park gates.

Just concentrate on depth, speed of the swing of the fly and listen to those who do catch. Some spend too long overcomplicating the issue and worrying about if their casting is perfect every cast. The fish WILL come!!

I've been trying for a year and bit to get a "salmon"! Haven't even got a tug and on the fly, Its a big change from trout fishing on the stream! Keep going and it will happen! thats what i say!

Just throw the thing in and hope for the best. Keep your eyes on the wildlife around you and forget about the fish. You will then get a fish and spend rest of time wondering what you had done different that time.

Stick something fluffy and bright on. The brighter and flashier the better.

Fish it like you would a trout fly. Cast it down and across and as it reaches its quickest point of swing start to work it back to you. Try a slow retrieve and twitch; try a fast retrieve; try just letting it hang for a moment before retrieving.

I am no salmon fisherman but these techniques seem to work for me.

Oh it's a strange thing Salmon fishing. Used to fish for them when I lived in Eire mid 80s. Caught a few, dozen or more. Don't know who was more suprised, me or the fish! It's worth waiting for though. Oh yes...few of them nearly pulled the arm off me . Man they are strong.

No great advice from me I'm afraid. Be patient as above, it WILL happen. Try to fish where the Salmon are. And don't get to technical, there's no need. If they are up for it, i.e. sploshing around on the river in the evening, send the fly straight to them as you would for a trout. Right place right time and hang on :).

Good luck

Chris

The magic ingredient is confidence.
When I started salmon fishing in the hey days of the 1950,s - I fished for several seasons without ever connecting with a salmon on the fly. I caught my first one with a #4 March Brown - the least flashy fly in the box - but from then on I seemed to fish with a single-mindedness that almost invariably ended up with a salmon on the grass.
