River dove ellastone

My first bash of the season, went to ellastone on the drac strech, only managed to get a coulpe of hours in but the weather was lovely and could not resist to thrash the water for a bit, quite a few flys coming off, think they were olives, not many rises but the odd few from grayling, took a nice out of season grayling of around a pound on a small black F fly, it was a aggressive take from grayling and come clean out the water to take my fly, i had one more take but missed it,
The buzz i get from fishing dry fly and seeing the take is what its all about for me, cant wait to get out again,
Will be off to the churnet next week for them wildies i hope!

The brook

The result of my first outing of the Trout season was.... 2 grayling!

I went to the brook this morning just really to give it a go. Using my favourite prospecting set up, a flashback PTN NZ style under a black Klinkhammer I fished mostly the top end of our section. I caught one grayling from the pool where we cleared the tree on the last working party, and another from up near the hedge. Fished right up to the footbridge and then wandered back down. By the time the church bells in Sutton started to ring quite a stiff breeze had got up so I called it a day.
Perhaps a bit early yet for much to be looking upwards in the brrok, both fish were on the PTN.
Regards,
Dave.
Hi Dave nice to see you trying the sutton brook out, i have fished it a few times but never seen any trout, if you look on my blog i had some massive chub taken on a dry last year, its a lovely brook and should hold some good trout but i never seem to get on them, have you had much there? Let me know if you fancy a go down the Churnet at alton soon, think you would like it there mate..

Nice one

Drac

Well Kev i see your point to some degree, but you told me to join and it was the best option for me, i had a great season up there last year and for the money you get some cracking fishing, Ellastone seemed to get fished more in the winter for graying, summer time i spent alot of time up there and did not see that many fishing it, i had the river to myself many a time, there are also alot more rivers on the licence to fish which i will try this year but i know most of them are a long journey for you,
I think a man with your money you should join again:wine:
Well it is well worth joining if you fancy trying out a 12ft 9# single hander in the autumn if you know what i mean:rolleyes:

Fish Kill

Glen

You might be dissapointed with the top end of the Churnet this year - there was a fish kill just after Xmas - not sure it was where you fish though.

Alex
Alex
The part i fished was directly downstream of the Ladffa strech, when you say a fish kill do you mean there was a spill into the river?
I will be gutted if that is the case because there were some top class wild trout in there

The farm

The farm as I call it is the piece of water DRAC have just down from the McDonalds on the A50. There is a lay bay on the other side just before the turnoff. Hopefully I will see you on it some time on it during the year. Its handy for me as I have top travel from the other side of leicester.
Yes i know where you mean now, i did a short session there last year and took some nice size grayling, i found the wading a bit dodgy in places, but will be giving some more time there, let me know when you go again

Good man Glen, thats great news and me and our kid will no doubt expect a few days together at Dovedale ;). We can also offer plenty of DCAC guest tickets to give even more variety throughout the year ;).

All those Ladffa lads posting offensive pictures beware next time you hear rustling from the bushes on the riverbank, prepare to sqeel like a pig ;)

Mick
Yes will be nice to see the bad ass brothers again Mick, had right good laugh with John up at carsington, we had my walky talkys while in the boats talking **** all day and not catching much!!
The photo of the lad with the guitar that Kev posted off the film 'deliverence' (spelling) is a classic, i play guitar and am trying to learn that song at the min so if you hear it up dovedale in the bushes beware!!!:D:D

Joining

Chaps,

is there a waiting list for DRAC? I'm in desperate need of some good river trouting. These reservoirs get a bit boring after a while!!!! And i do love a bit of barbel fishing - Sounds to me like DRAC would be perfect!!!

Cheers
I dont think there is mate, but you can ring the secretary who is very helpful, it is well worth a ticket, you get some great waters for the money, there is a fly fishing ticket which is around 65 pound but the bait fishing is about 55 i think..
If you click on the link in the above post that Squire has put on you can get the info, numbers ect off the website

Thanks
Glen

Drac website

Only right and proper that this thread has a link to the above....

Your right Dave but not many people go on there to discuss the rivers so its helpful for the club to get on here, already people are asking about joining which must be good for the club:goodcast:
Its about time you got a blog going Dave, need to see some pics of those big browns you will be having this year!

Nice one
Glen:)

I fished Ellastone again this afternoon, still bl##dy cold
The top section was again the most productive, five fish all to size 14 bead head nymphs. There were a few splashy rises, I tried a dry PT which created some interest, one hook up, and then it was gone
Not sure if there is a colony moving in but of the five fish two were rainbows, how queer.
I stopped for an hour at Eaton Dovedale on the way home, no joy there I'm afraid and it felt even more bleak than Ellastone.
Nice one Dave, looks like your getting more lucky than me!! Like Fishcake says they fight like man, i can vouch for that too, i had one last year that took me all over the place,
It would be nice if they were breeding in there like the wye, well the picture of the rainbow you caught looks top quality and could be wild, but better leave that to the experts...
Will see you up there soon Dave when them trout start to sip off the top, them gold beads just dont do it for me,
Nice one Glen

Hi Guys,

I joined DRAC last autumn but work and more recently a torn disc in my back have conspired to stop me coming. hope to get out v soon now so if you see brand new waders its probably me. I fish mostly still water so learning much as i progress. Hope to meet some of you fellas soon:)
Yes hope to see you up there soon, the ellastone strech is a great if your just getting into rivers, plenty of fish and a good chance of one of squires big rainbows:,
The best flys i used on there were a grey duster and a small black klinkhammer, the duster used to out fish any fly i used.. let us know when you go..

This morning I got myself out of bed and down to the river fairly early. It was a cold morning, I had to scrape the car before leaving. I was fishing by 0845 and started at the top of the section in the faster water. I worked my way up to the boundary catching 4 fish; 2 trout, 2 grayling. All the fish were caught on pheasant tail or hares ear bead head nymphs. The water was really cold or maybe it was just because I noticed it more; I've just swapped from neoprene to breathables.
After I had thawed out a bit I caught one more trout from the middle section before calling it a day just before lunch. The heater in the car was very welcome!
One of the trout I caught was a rainbow. First I've caught on the fly here allthough I had a couple from the millstream float fishing during the winter. I heard a few reports of them being caught last year, mainly by that spawny git Glen :D
Wherever they have come from they seem to be surviving OK. Not one of my better photos but here goes....

Image
This fish looks very wild to me, alot like a wye rainbow, anybody know if it is?

Ellastone

Whent for a couple of hours after work tonight, blanked for the first time on Ellastone, well i did fish a dry fly all night, met a nice bloke up there who said he had a couple a grayling to the nymph,
After a short rain pour while fishing there were loads of ldo's coming off everywhere but even that did not spark many rises, saw a few but nothing much, another few weeks and we should see some good dry fly fishing, I think you have put a jinx on me dave saying i was lucky:(
