I really enjoy going to Slovenia a couple of weekends per year to fish. This is due to many reasons:
1. Cheapish direct flights
2. Great fishing can be found within an hour of the airport
3. Lots of fishing shops who to sell you a fishing permit and day ticket
4. It’s easy to fish without a guide as the shops provide great maps
5. There is no red tape such having to pass a fishing exam etc
6. It’s stunningly beautiful.

I Would really like explore other destinations in Europe. Do any of you have any other recommendations of other destinations, where time on the water is maximised and the infrastructure is such, that there is not too much extended travel involved or red tape, as I would only have a weekend to enjoy.

Any guidance, gratefully received.
cheers

In Europe, places that I have caught salmonids on the fly, and that fit (most of!) your criteria include:

- Oslo: the Akerselva is a stunning small salmon river running straight through the city
- Stockholm: Sea Trout (and Salmon; I have not caught one) in the Stockholmstrom in the centre of the city.
- Perugia: an hour from the Tevere (see my recent post)
- Prague: a two hour drive to Susice, and wonderful fishing on the Otava
- Zurich: the Limmatt. OK, I admit it, this can be pretty urban, and you need to get up early to get a long (safe) back cast in!

I travel quite a bit, mainly for work, and really enjoy urban and near-urban fishing.
You might be a bit spoiled by Slovenia, though......

Slovakia.

I've just come back from a trip (I used a guide because I had limited time).

The only thing I'm not too sure about is #3. They are there for the locals, of course. You'd just need to find them.

It achieves everything else on your list though.

Yes Slovakia is a place I would love to visit. I'm currently based in Turkey, so it's quite close to me. Thanks for your suggestion.

Not sure how much it's changed as I last fished there 15 years ago but the d'Aosta Valley in Italy should tick all your boxes. Drive time from Turin is about 90 minutes, plenty of cheap B&B's, incredible food and daily ticket prices for fishing were about €10 back then. The whole area is a 12 month tourist destination so English is widely spoken. A quick Google found this website which will help with any planning https://www.pescavda.it/

Poland - Dunajec river + surroundigns
My fishing buddies were there in August this year and they had a great time. They have an all-in package (5 days guided fishing, full pension lodge, no need to hire a car because they pick you up from the airport and drive you around, all this for less than 1000 euro).

Austria - Braurup
The hotel that has the largest fishing area (lakes and rivers) in Austria. You can cacth brown trout, lake trout, rainbow, arctic char, brookies, grayling, ...

Norway - fly fishing in the fjords for cod, pollock and mackerel
Fly to Molde airport, hire a car and go fishing in harbors and on ferry piers. I recommend #8 to #10 for big fish and pollock.

Spain- within 3 hours of Bacelona you have great fishing in the Pyrenees. Licenses and day tickets are very easy to obtain. Depending on the time of year you can have stretches of river to yourself. the weather is generally very pleasant. Within 90 minutes of the airport you have slightly busier beats but all the same very good fishing in the area of Ripoll and Angles.

I was just going to post about Spanish barbel , I've been going for 10 years , Extremadura has 1000s of miles of river and reservoir. All free after buying a state license for next to nothing.
Good fishing is about 2.5 hours drive from Madrid, stunning area , lovely locals , very cheap digs and food.
Look up a guy called Cesar Tardio on YouTube, his vids drew me there.
I can supply information if required.
Cheers Colin
