Hi,

First off i am new to this so apologies if I am being stupid.

I have bought an okuma airframe 4/6 reel and some airflo forty plus 6 line.
Problem is the line is not fitting on the reel.
I only have about 30 metres of backing which is not taking up much room.

What options do I have?
- lose some of the fly line (reel end)?
- get a 7/9 reel?

help would be really appreciated

thanks

Think about this.a 40+ line is 40 yards long and has a biggish head for it's rating.all add up to it being more suitable for a 7# reel get a normal line 26-30 yards long and it will fit your reel. or cut 10 yards of running line off of your 40+:thumbs:

Firstly, welcome to the forum. :)

As far as your problem goes, you've pretty much covered the two options yourself. The problem is twofold. You've bought a reel that has an upper limit of a 6 weight line, so a 'standard' 30 yard long 6 weight floater wouldn't fit much backing on anyway. You've coupled that with buying a 40+ line. The 40+ lines are, as the name implies, 40+ yards long, so you've got an extra 11 yards (over a standard line) of line to find room for.

So, the question is... do you want that extra 11 yards? If you're planning on using 40+ lines exclusively, I'd get a bigger reel. It those extra 11 yards are unlikely to ever see the light of day...snip, snip. The decision is yours.

Personally, I'd get a bigger reel. At least with a bigger reel you'll never have that problem again. I usually up-size my reels, with 6 weights I always put them on a reel designed to carry 7 weights and add more backing. It gives you a line with bigger coils in the event of line memory and a larger diameter reel retrieves more line per turn in the event of wanting to get a fish 'on the reel' rather than playing it with loose line.
