I think it's net marks I'm seeing on salmon caught in the river, dark scores on the sides of fish isn't unusual at all with grilse.
I'm wondering if there caused by nets of all sorts from individuals or if there's a particular offender like drift nets or whatever?

Thanks Al

a lot of the marks I see are Seal marks.but some are also obstacle marks (like getting over weirs. and the likes)
About 10 years ago our river suffered from an extended drought.the salmon in a weir pool had to be netted and taken above obstruction. It was very noticable that the netted fish all had the same marks when caught later on

After reading the replies I don't think it is net marks I'm seeing, predators or obstacle marks I believe.
Typically I've not got photos of what I was picturing, there dark near black scores on the fish often in 3,s about 1/1/4" apart, i pictured the knots on the nets doing it after hearing of net marks.
Yes I know that fish is a kipper ? but I can't help what takes my flee ?
