Some slug and maggot free biggies from the shoreline today. Will grind down once finally dry.

It's an incredible season this year in France, and unfortunately I'm not here.
Personnally I don't take them when they are so big (and soft), the small and firm ones with white underside are much, much better...

Did you read about that aussie woman who poisoned and killed her ex's parents and other family with death cap mushrooms in a Beef Wellington? 😳
Quite frankly I'd be nervous about picking and eating mushrooms, but I guess it's a learnt skill. I recall a post by April Vokey now in australia of her mushroom foraging exploits and there were many responses by local experts informing of poisonous varieties.

Yes, saw that - not sure how she thought she'd get away with it 🤷🏻‍♂️
I only eat a few varieties that are hard to mix up with anything toxic but I do see a few Death Caps most years - I posted this pic upthread a while back;

A quarter of one of these will kill you ☠

Good one. (y) in all my years of mushroom hunting, I have never found a death cap - or a destroying angel. An American guy posted a destroying angel in the fungi thread on the photography forum...

He had no idea what he had got!

The 2 in the same genus (Amanita) that we get locally are fly agaric (A. muscaria)...

Supposed to be more hallucinogenic than toxic, but I'm not tempted.

The other one we get is tawny grisette (A. fulva)...

It's good to eat, but I've never been tempted, simply because of who it is related to! 🤪

Most years we got a good crop of wood mushrooms along the bridleway...

But this year I have seen absolutely none, so far. Don't know if the dry weather has held them back and they might yet produce a bloom?

Usually get a few parasols as well...

As always when autumn is coming: you don't know or you have a doubt, so don't touch, as simple as that!

I'm knowing a very few and I stick to those: porcinis (two species), chanterelles (two species also), black trumpets, Caesar's amanite, hedgehog mushrooms, meadow mushroom and that's all.
And morel's in spring (always cooked! otherwise it is toxic).

I wonder if you can take a shot on your phone then ask Google what it is. Obviously you still have to take it with a pinch of salt as AI can "hallucinate".
It can be awfully good at getting it wrong then being very gracious about it and having another go.
AI: sorry about that, maybe it was a Death Cap! 😂
