That does seem odd given you would expect them of all people to know.

When my mother-in-law wrote off her first BMW i3 (the hybrid one that had a really small fuel tank and a bigger than normal battery for a hybrid) my father-in-law went to collect some items that were left in it from the car dealership where it had been taken and it was coned off in a corner of their site.
