The things people say when fishing eh?
Just watching Paul Young Road trip - quote:

"It's that moment when you think it's the bottom ...and the bottom starts to move!"

i'm sure we all know that feeling :D

"Observation plus thought equals fish." Richard Walker.
That is a bit too Dr Spock for me.

"Study to be quiet" Izaak Walton - that's more like it:)

You wont catch a fish if your fly/bait isn't in the water.
Speaking as an occasional dapper I can assure you that one isn't true!

I rather like something John Tyzack said on one of his DVDs when fishing a small river. Something to the effect of
"Show it to them once. If they don't want it the first time, they won't want it a second time round"
It's a useful reminder as I know that I fish too slowly.

Bill1,

As John T should know, it ain't necessarily so!

I remember watching one of the French team practising on the River Lambourn for the World Championships in 2000. He had spotted a fish in about 15" of very clear water lying static on the river bed. I told him that the fish knew he was there, was prepared to ignore him and on that account he wouldn't catch it.

He put dry flies over it for fifteen minutes until the fish just gave up and took one off the surface. It was the most remarkable example of determined fishing I have ever seen.

I'll always give a rising fish at least three goes before moving on.

It is reputed that old an ghillie expecting to share a dram from his guest's hip flask to ' wet the salmon's head ' was so so dismayed when not offered a wee dram the guest having had his fill and returning the flask to his pocket ...Retorted
'' Those that can drink on their own can fish on their own ''
and duly walked away leaving his guest somewhat bewildered !

'' See that fish Sir just like my missus - it's mouth keeps opening but nothing comes out ! ''

'' That fish knows it's onions ! ''

Bill1,

I know we're getting off track a bit here, but when fishing in the mountain rivers in Austria if I see a fish come to the fly and not take it, then there is a decision to be made. He's seen it once and didn't like it either because he spotted it was a wrong 'un, or more likely because it had moved outside his feeding zone. Whatever, I know he won't bother with that fly again so the decision is either change flies or move on. If it is a particularly good fish I change, if not I move on.
