Fly fishing in China

Overall, it may be one of the worst countries for fishing. Its amazing country, amazing rivers. But there is one huge problem, poachers.... Everywhere, even during day time. They use electricity and nets most of the time... And other means to catch fish.
Even when using rod, there is no any limitations on how small fish they will take or how many....

But, there is bright side. Any place without people and remote can be full with fish.

Here are some videos i made during my trip to central part of China....

There are few videos with indopacific tarpon....

My kind of fishing. Love fishing the remote, wild and wonderful places! Are those fish native Lenok? Another place for the list anyway along with the small stream trout of Mexico and maybe one day if things improve the trout of northern Afghanistan. Japan for the various species of char is high on my list as my next fishing adventure though.

Dgp, thanks... Glad you liked it.

Sean, i enjoy it too.... Love catching new species.... Lenok was native ... Locals devastated the population, so they reintroduced it again.. now it has amazing population here ... Not rare to get more than 100fish a day

Well you've really cracked it. Would have been good to see what flies you are using and a close up of the trout to see their markings. Truly wild fish never seen an artificial fly and not easily spooked with your catching in the same pool. Thanks for sharing

Great - certainly the best of the three. Incredible how many fish next to the boulder and weren't spooked by the casting and catching !. Maybe I missed it but was your chinese friend a guide? Looked as though you were way off the beaten track (be interesting to know which part of China you were) but then did I see crash barriers in the background as though close to a road? Be good to know the story behind this trip.

I live in china.... People here are pretty new in fly fishing so i am teaching tem sometimes giving some lessions. This is a friend. I was teaching him about euronymphing, and he learns lretty fast. This river is in central china, near Xi'an. There is almost no fishing here. So every time i go its great.
Fish are not used to people as predators.... They swim away if they see a man, but this was deep spot so they were cool.

Sometimes, if i stay still, fish come back and i can do some sight fishing [emoji3][emoji3][emoji3]

Interesting part are animals around, pandas, golden monkeys, leopards.... Pretty wild. This lart of the river is near village road.... Village has less than 100people. We also went upstream, and it was amazing too.. but fish were smaller.... (Second day)

Hopefully, i will go again.

The water looks incredibly clear as you say, but I’m afraid I only got halfway through two of the clips.
It seems a numbers game to me, quantity rather than quality, yes they might be pretty little restocked fish but to keep skimming small fish across the river every cast I’d find extremely boring.
I didn’t watch it all, so if any fish over 8ozs were caught I apologise but to me it’s just tiresome watching it.
Give me one decent tricky fish of some size that needs a bit of skill to catch it anyday.
Not having a go honest, just not for me.

Take a look at day three.... And day four.
In day three there are several decent fish, at least in my opinion.

Its restocked more than decade ago, so its wild fish. Which i prefer more than any stocked fish.
And of course, u may not like it..... Its impossible to make something all people will like.
Cheers

Thank you Delray for watching. Its mostly rather small fish.... But its wild... Problem is that there are occasional poachers there. But still, fish population is amazing.
Since i live in China, i dont have much opportunity to go to any decent fishing so when i do, i will try to catch as many fish as i can... I can go trout fishing maybe twice a year.... So i have to get most of if [emoji2]

YouTube

In this video i am unintentionally explaining how to be versatile and with just one setup cover most of possible trout fishing situations.
Dry fly, euronymphing, long line nymphing.... Its here....
Usually i hate to carry two rods.... I like mobility... So this is what i do.... I hope you will enjoy the video.
Comment it, share it.... But before all, enjoy it...

Tight lines

Nice video oholi.
To dry your cdc tie an elastic band onto a d-ring on your jacket/bag etc, hook on the wet fly stretching the band, then strum the band, it dries your fly. Then you can use the tissue to blow your nose.

Thanks, i know for that trick but honestly never tried it.
But i definitely need to try

They are same as any other. Airport stuff will throw your bags the same way as they do anywhere. As for security checks they may ask you to open and show what you have. So remove all lighters that you may have in checked in luggage. No knives allowed....
If its just transit through china you are fine if your bags are checked through.

Hand luggage is better without any fishing gear or rods.

They scanned me twice in mongolia because of couple of hundreds of tungsten beads.... I had to show those beads several times when entering plane around china.... But thats all. Once they see its my tying stuff and i show flies with tungstens all is fine.

Its pain in the a.. But don't worry

Cheers

Well one can never know
From china to serbia i had 7 rods in a large tube as my carry on luggage plus suitcase and it was fine.... On the way back i wasnt allowed to enter plane in serbia with just one rod in a small tube... Same company... They said i could stab someone with my rod.... Stupid rules which most of them even dont know. .

Very nice! I am shocked you were able to find waters that aren't grossly polluted. I worked in China for a little over 2 years out of Chengdu and Shanghai. Water pollution is rampant all over the country. We were located on what could have been a beautiful river. Not only was it polluted but widely overfished. I watched the local fishermen with their fish traps pull in fish smaller than what you were catching and keep them for market. I'm guessing you had to go inland quite a bit north and west to find water such as you were fishing.

Sorry for my super late reply

Yes, true, china is mostly polluted and rivers are fu..ed up... Every time i go somewhere i see someone poaching... Mostly with electricity......

These rivers are in central china.... North and west are also good.... Some places in the west are without people... I saw some videos of world class fishing there....

Chengdu is ok.... Mountains around it hold some iwana trout.... But guys keep it a secret.... For the reasons you already know.

Right now i am mostly into army fish.... Chinese version of masheer.... Beautiful fish.... And very difficult to get. Very cautious... I use 15ft leader plus 3ft tippet for it... And most of the time.... They swim away if they see my leader in the air.... Unbelievable fish.
