Hi, does anyone have any advice on the Maxcatch Premier rod? I'm looking at the Premier combo with the Avid reel in 7 or 8wt, as I'm after something for fishing streamers occassionally. Maybe for barbel also. Not used Maxcatch previously - am also looking at Greys Fin and KSTX - so am wondering how this particular model might fare against these Grey
Nice light rods, medium action I'd say, good cosmetics and reel fittings, compartmented cordura carry case, extremely good VFM, get it, if you don't like it, which I doubt, you've got a cheap spare.
I bought the 8'4" #3 and 9'00 #4 models of Premier they're both excellent. Oh yeah, if you break one, - and I've broken mine three times so far - it's only £12 for a new section, prompt return, can't go wrong.
Get one of the MC Eco lines with it, they really are amazingly good, choose a drab olive one, they usually chuck one in with the rod but in a lurid colour.

Agree with Noel, the premier and the extreme are both very functional and great VFM. I have tried many of their rods, the nano, sky high, salt pro, ultralite, the premier and extreme. None of which disappointed.

I didn't like their glass rods or the cheaper Spey rods, although many people do like them.

Thanks, really helpful - might take a punt on a Premier!

Like other have said the premiere is great value for money I would probably also discribe it as medium action. How would you discribe the other rods running bear?.

Premier and extreme, pleasant medium action, true to weight. Horrible reel seat on the extreme.

Salt pro, i have 4 of them now. A little heavy on the scales according to their website but they feel fine in the hand. Throw a line a long way but are by no means stiff. A fast medium with a reasonable tip recovery. The #9 is an excellent pike rod. All are true to weight. The #11 feels a bit like a spinning rod to be fair, but then I am using it with a head made from T14.

The ultralite, i have a 6'6" cant recall if its a 2 or 3. Lovely short range stream rod. I am teaching the youngster with it. Handles a line or two over weight very nicely.

Nano. Nice crisp action, just about fast, but at the slow end of fast if you get me. Suposed to be the same blank materials as the sky high, but it feels a little more action in the middle of the blank and the tip doesnt recover as quick as the sky high in the same line weights. Lovely in a #4 on a small to medium river, roll casts well, works well wifh little mini speys and back casts etc. I bought mine used, a good rod at retail, a steal at 60 quid or whatever i paid. An action that might not sell off a rack as well as something faster, but it fishes very well.

The sky high. What a blank for 100 quid. As good as many 400 quid rods I have cast. Fastish, lovely tip, zippy and effortless. The six wt feels like a 5 in the hand, but can cast a wf7 sinker to the backing with ease, although it is best with a 6. The reel seat works, but it is hideous. The blank is a beautiful green with deep red whippings, like an 80s premium shakey and I like it like that. Out of maybe the 20-25 fly rods I own, the 6wt sky high is one of the three I enjoy using the most. The other two retailed at £699 and £899!

Funny how tastes vary, I really like the simple plain anodised alloy with double locking rings 🤷🏻‍♂️
I do like the plain, such as is on the Salt Pro with it's simple anodised double locker. I feel the extreme feels like leftover aluminium from the shop floor, like most Chinese reverse engineering of 20 years ago.

Reel seat looks fine to me and locks the reel. Not sure what else it should do. I've hammered the thing for almost two years; it works just fine. And £25 wtf???
I know its 25 quid and the blank is better than we paid £100 for not that many years ago...but it just looks like a seat you'd get on a 1990s seaside spinning rod. Yes it does work, but it's still there looking back at me. I am not a highly polished cocobola snob btw, there's nothing wrong with a plastic fuji. It is however better than the gold thing on the sky high with it's overly narrow locking rings.

Guys just a quick note on the Extreme rod. I got this because I wanted a 10' 7# and the Extreme is one of the few rods that they do in 10 ft.

It's a clunker to be honest. I don't know what measured weight it is, but it "feels" like it weighs a ton. Now I know a 10' 7# is never going to be light as a feather, but this thing just feels like a chore to cast. Handle not very comfortable either. Far too chunky. And the rod case is a joke.

The last day I fished it, I swapped to using my 9' 6# Oracle II for fishing a dry fly. It felt like I had swapped to using a little 3 weight, it felt so light in comparison.

So folks, spend an extra 20 or 30 quid and get avoid this one.

I had the Extreme 9' 6" #6 and gave it to British Heart Foundation, for the same reasons. I much prefer my Shakespeare Oracle Stillwater in the same configuration.

On the other hand the 8'6" 4wt Extreme is a cracking rod. It is a really good option for me for shore fishing lakes with dries and wets. I keep coming back to it because the action is great and it is light in the hand, casts 'Extreme'ly well and has the reserve power to cope with some serious fish. 😉

Apologies if anyone else has mentioned this but I see fishing megastore are selling maxcatch floating fly lines, but the ones they sell don't seem to be in the latest list of lines on the Maxcatch website. They seem to be around twice the price of the closest lines buying direct from Maxcatch, and when I've bought them direct from Maxcatch they have often sent me two!
