Wouldn't a 6 metre whip do the same job?

And you could alter the length.

Sorry Fred a whip is a telescopic rod with no reel. You attach the line to the end and swing fish into hand

Doubt you get them on your side of the pond:)
In one way it might (i.e. it is physically possible)

But the best answer is 'Not really', the casting taper and tip recovery are different and since all of the pleasure is found in developing and using smooth accurate FY casting loops, the rods that are designed for the purpose help with that (rather than hindering it).

Excellent thread; loved both of those videos. Short odds of you seeing anyone fishing like that here in the PNW. Hell, even where could you purchase a rod for this type of fishing would be daunting. Well almost, one company is now advertising Tenkara rods on the Internet.
